Elmbridge to London: 22 mins from Walton, £2,492 up

Elmbridge has ten railway stations and every one of them is South Western Railway into London Waterloo. That is where the similarity ends. Walton-on-Thames reaches Waterloo in 22 minutes. Cobham & Stoke d’Abernon takes 45. Both are in the same borough, both are commuter stations, and the slower one costs £256 a year more.

The borough sits across two different railways, and which one your station is on matters far more than how far from London you live.

The fast line and the slow line

Four Elmbridge stations sit on the South West Main Line, the four-track route out of Waterloo through Surbiton. Six sit on branches: the New Guildford line through Claygate and Cobham, and the Hampton Court branch.

These are the fastest journey to Waterloo and the number of departures between 06:45 and 09:00 on a normal weekday morning, taken from the National Rail timetable for Monday 10 August 2026.

The frequency gap is as important as the speed gap. Walton and Weybridge get ten or eleven trains in the two and a quarter hours before 9am. Claygate and Hinchley Wood get four, one every half hour, and if you miss one you wait thirty minutes.

The Surbiton change that saves four minutes

If you use the New Guildford line, the direct train is not the fastest way in. From Claygate the 07:31 direct reaches Waterloo at 08:10, but the same train connects at Surbiton into a main-line fast that arrives at 08:06. The same trick works from Hinchley Wood, Oxshott and Cobham, and saves three to five minutes at the cost of one change. It is the reason Surbiton, just outside the borough, functions as Elmbridge’s real interchange.

Weybridge has its own version of this. It sits where the main line meets the Hounslow loop, so some Weybridge trains run the long way round through Hounslow and take 35 to 44 minutes, while the fast ones via Surbiton take 24. Check the route before you get on, and note that the cheaper season ticket from Weybridge is the “via Surbiton” one, which is not valid on the loop.

What it costs

These are the current annual season ticket prices to London Terminals from each station, on the cheapest permitted route.

The price ladder does not follow the timetable. Thames Ditton is the cheapest station in the borough and one of the slowest. Weybridge is the most expensive and one of the fastest. What you are paying for is distance from London, not speed, so the branch-line stations closest to town are cheap and slow while the main-line stations further out are quick and dear. Cobham is the worst of both: 45 minutes and £3,480 a year.

The gap between the cheapest and dearest annual ticket, Thames Ditton to Weybridge, is £1,044 a year.

The two stations that take contactless

Hampton Court and Thames Ditton are inside London fare zone 6. You can touch in and out with a contactless card, an Oyster card or a Freedom Pass, and daily and weekly capping applies. Both appear on the Transport for London rail and tube services map, and neither is sold a “plus Travelcard” season ticket, because a zones 1 to 6 Travelcard already covers them.

No other Elmbridge station is in the zones. From Esher, Hersham, Walton, Weybridge, Hinchley Wood, Claygate, Oxshott or Cobham you need a ticket bought before you travel. Surbiton, one stop up the main line, is the last zone 6 station, which is why some people drive there.

Hampton Court station is also worth a word of warning on geography: it is not in Hampton Court. It stands on the Elmbridge bank of the river in East Molesey, and the palace is over the bridge in the London Borough of Richmond upon Thames.

Walk-up fares

If you travel occasionally rather than daily, these are the Anytime Day Single fares to Waterloo on the cheapest permitted route, checked on the same date: Thames Ditton and Hampton Court £9.40, Esher, Claygate and Hinchley Wood £9.60, Hersham £9.70, Walton-on-Thames £10.40, Weybridge and Oxshott £10.70 and Cobham £11.60. An Anytime Day Return from Esher is £18.80, and an Anytime Day Travelcard, which adds Underground and bus travel in zones 1 to 6, is £29.10.

If you are going into London after the morning peak, an Off-Peak Day Travelcard is usually cheaper than a return plus separate Tube fares, and worth checking before you buy a plain return.

Which London station do Elmbridge trains go to?
